Old Fashioned Homemade Lemonade

This summer, when the temperatures have risen to record levels, I have been making some Old Fashioned Homemade Lemonade. I haven’t made it for years but I remember my mother making gallons of it in the summer of 1976, when the record for the hottest day in June that has just been broken was set. My daughter who was only two years old that summer loved it and my grandchildren have now given it the thumbs up too.

It is very easy to make – here is the recipe:

Ingredients

  • 4 unwaxed lemons

  • 4 ounces granulated sugar

  • 3 pints boiling water

Directions

  • Wash the lemons.
  • Remove the zest from the lemons using a grater or zester. Be careful not to include any white pith as this will be bitter.
  • Put the lemon zest and lemon juice (straining out any pips as these could make the lemonade bitter) into a large heat proof bowl.
  • Add the sugar.
  • Pour over the boiling water.
  • Stir to dissolve the sugar.
  • Cover and leave to get cold.
  • Place covered bowl in the refrigerator until thoroughly chilled. At lease 2 hours but preferably overnight.
  • Strain into a glass jug to serve – ice and lemon slices are a nice addition.

Serving and Storing Old Fashioned Homemade Lemonade

Serve the lemonade with ice and lemon slices, ideally in tall glasses. The lemonade can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days – but I would be surprised if you have any left.

I won’t wish you happy baking this week – just ‘KEEP COOL’ and drink plenty of lemonade!
