Four Fresh Fruity Scones for Summer

Summer is the perfect time for a lazy, indulgent afternoon tea, while lounging in the cool shade or basking in the sun.

To inspire you to get creative with your scones, I’ve picked four of my fresh fruity scone recipes to get you baking this summer.


1. Blueberry and Lime Scones

Blueberries work so well in scones. Here I have combined them with lime to add tartness and create a contrast with the sweet fruit.

Serve with clotted cream and blueberry jam. However, if you want to take these scones to a whole new level, serve them with clotted cream and homemade blueberry and lime curd.

2. Fig and Honey Scones

Figs and honey are a perfect combination of flavours. Serve with either butter or clotted cream and drizzle on plenty of extra honey.

If you have any left over in the morning, toast and butter them for breakfast and add plenty more honey, of course.

3. Strawberry and Rose Scones

I created these scones especially for the Queen’s Jubilee. As British strawberries are at their peak now, and Wimbledon is approaching, I had to include these deliciously light and summery scones.

They are drizzled with rose icing and sprinkled with freeze dried strawberries. Serve with clotted cream and strawberry jam. If you really like the rose flavour use rose flavoured whipped cream instead of the clotted cream.

4. Apple and Cinnamon Scones

Now, these scones would be perfectly suited to autumn when the new crop of British apples are available, but these apple and cinnamon scones are so delicious I had to include them here. They are also an absolute favourite with the customers at Duddleswell Tea Rooms!

Apple butter works very well with these scones.

I found a recipe for apple butter in a book written by Patricia Lousada, “An American Sampler”. I have changed the recipe so that it can be made in a slow cooker, which means that you can leave it to cook without worrying about it burning.

If you have some left over use as a spread on bread or toast. Also try stirring it into plain yoghurt, or as a topping for porridge.
